Considerations to Take Before You Travel

This year there is a little more to think about before you book your flights, one way to help keep your family and friends protected is to look at the number of COVID-19 cases at your destination. If there are high numbers, you may want to consider avoiding higher traffic areas of town.

Some states have local restrictions for travel as well, such as requiring those that have recently traveled to stay at home for 14 days after returning. Be sure to check local health websites to make sure that you’re prepared for your arrival at your destination. If you’re traveling internationally, make sure to check with the destination’s Office of Foreign Affairs or Ministry of Health.

It is important to think of the trip as a whole, not just getting to your destination. Be aware of all parts of your travel from arriving at the airport, pre-flight protocols, arriving at your destination, and your plans after arrival! Most importantly, do not travel if you are feeling ill!

Stay Safe at the Airport

Airports are a hot spot for overcrowding, especially during the holidays. Be sure to wear a mask when possible and as required. You may be asked to remove your mask during pre-flight identification checks and screening. Try your best to practice social distancing and practice good hygiene by washing your hands when possible.

Try to arrive at the airport early to allow extra time for checking bags, security checks, and to get to your departure gate. COVID-19 has impacted many airport’s staffing, so give yourself extra time to get through pre-flight protocols. Be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after security checks!

Many airports are upping their safety protocols and reducing physical contact, be sure to follow all instructions and be extra alert to changes at your local airport since the last time you’ve traveled!

In the Air

The actual risk of contracting COVID-19 while in the air is low. Airplanes are designed to have proper airflow and filtration to reduce the odds of you getting sick but, there are still things you can do to reduce your chances of getting ill.

Try to wear your mask whenever possible during your flight. Masks greatly reduce particulates that travel through the air and can reduce the odds of transmitting the disease. You should also stay seated throughout the flight if possible. Staying seated reduces the risk of unplanned physical contact in the tighter confines of the plane.
